Enemy of the State is an american movie that deals with the subject of NSA agents going wrong and using power and technology to the end to coverup their wrong deeds.They use the facilities and survellaince devices for national security and make them a mockery by being a threat to the society.
The story takes place in modern america where NSA agents, other law enforcing and intelligence agencies can sneak in to the privacy of a normal citizen.They can get your bank statements, phone call history, most called numbers, travel details,social information and everything.Now a legislation is on the brink of getting passed in the US Congress.Congressman Phil Hammersly (Jason Robards) belonging to the Republican party is vehemently opposing the bill as he is of the opinion that the bill allows further intrusion of privacy on the lifes on innocent citizens.
He is approached by Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight) an NSA Officer and asked to shed his oppossition.Agent David Pratt (Barry Pepper) kills the unwilling Hammersly under the orders of Reynolds when the Congressman was enjoying his holiday at the banks of a lake.They set it up as a heart attack.But a video camera installed by the wild life researcher Daniel Zavitz (Jason Lee) on the premises captures the murder.
Zavitz calls his local news reporter friend who runs a leftist publication.He tells that the tv news about the heart attack and his video. Unfortunately his phone got tapped by the NSA agents who got alarmed by a reporting agent who saw the video tape pickup. He makes a copy to a computer disc.
Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith) is a labour union lawyer.He was representing Pintero (Tom Sizemore), a mafia don and gave him parole for a case about beating a labour union member.Dean displeases Pintero showing a tape showing him Pintero partying with the Labor officers which was against his terms of parole and was enough evidence to get his term on jail to be twenty years more.Pintero threatens Dean to reveal the source failing he would kill him,
Meanwhile Zavitz is hunted down by NSA agents for the copy of the computer disc.Zavitz run in to a store running from the NSA agents aided by satellite and aerial survellience.He meets Dean who was his childhood friend there and puts the computer disk in his shopping bag without his knowledge.Later Zavitz is dead on the road hit by a fire truck.
Now thinking Dean has the tape, the NSA bugs his house.They gets him fired.His credit cards does not work now.They are watching all actions of his.His source for the Pintero was an aide of Rachel, her ex girlfriend.Newspaper articles gets published claiming Rachel and Dean as traitors and talks in length about his illegal affairs with Rachel.But the truth was he was faithful to his wife and kid and he did met Rachel for work.Rachel gets killed and it is set up as if Dean is the murderer.
Now he gets the help of Brill the source of the tape that Rachel gave him.Brill (Gabrriel Byrne) was actually an ex NSA agent and he helps him to get out of the 'enemy of the state' dilemma by using the same tools of the NSA.They puts survellience camera on the hotel rooms where agents stay.
Brill and Dean teams up and using their intelligence they gets clean out of the situation when both are captured by involving FBI and Pintero's gang with the NSA.Altogether this movie is a good one for the male audience.
